Daylight Saving Time Begins
March
March 20th...  First Day of Spring
Okay maybe some people don't consider this a holiday, but why not?  Who doesn't love that extra hour of daylight?
3 Ways to Celebrate Daylight Saving Time...
        1. Go for an early evening walk paying special attention to the trees and budding flowers.
        2. Have a barbecue!
        3. Enjoy the extra hour of daylight by challenging your family to use NO electricity for one full hour.  Use that time to play a game, share a candlelit dinner or just talk.

St Patrick's Day
Ah, What a splendid day to be Irish and it seems we're all a little Irish on March 17th.

One tradition of this holiday that I've never understood until now is why do people pinch others who don't wear green.  I looked it up on Wikianswers.com and here are a few of the answers given...

        * You get pinched because you're a nonconformist.
            * Pinching gives you a bruise so you can have some green on you.
            * The act of pinching on St. Patrick's day began in America with Irish settlers who tried to get their kids to behave by telling them that fairies would come pinch them.

        And the answer ACTUALLY is:
Pinching those not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day is an American tradition, having really nothing to do with Ireland or St. Patrick. It's thought that the pinching started in the early 1700s, about the time that awareness of St. Patrick's as a holiday came to the fore, too, in Boston, in the Massachusetts colony. They thought if you wore green, it made you invisible to the Leprechauns, which was good because they would pinch anyone they could see. So the pinching is to warn and remind you about the Leprechauns.

Well now we know the rest of the story.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in many ways.  Wearing green, drinking green beer, hey, they even dye the river green in Chicago.  We have a group of friends that get together and have a party.  I love to play games so I will usually come up with some kind of gaming entertainment.  Here's a link to some of the things we've done. Sorry, no snakes in the actual history.
Guess that part of the story was "blarney".

A Short History Lesson
Saint Patrick is known as the Patron Saint of Ireland.
Born to wealthy parents in Britain March 17th, circa 460AD, he first came to Ireland when he was 16 as a prisoner. A group of Irish raiders attacked his family's estate and took him captive. He was held for 6 years working as a shepherd. Alone and afraid he turned to his Christian beliefs for comfort and began to dream of converting the Irish to Christianity. According to his writings he heard a voice that told him to escape and return to Britain. There he began his formally religious education and 15 years later returned to Ireland to fulfill his dream of converting the pagan Irish to Christianity.

Familiar with customs and traditions of the Irish he incorporated
Christian symbols and celebrations with native ones. He is believed
to be the creator of the Celtic Cross, a sun superimposed on a
traditional cross. The sun, considered a powerful Irish symbol blended
with the cross of Christianity was just one of the ways he reached the Irish.

First Day of Spring
First Day of Spring
Daylight Saving Time Begins

First Day of Spring.
Why not celebrate it! You’ve survived another winter. Spring is a new beginning. Think of it like New Year’s Eve without the black ties or fireworks.

The proper term is the Vernal Equinox. In the southern hemisphere, the vernal equinox corresponds to the center of the Sun crossing the celestial equator. This in layman’s terms means at the length of day to night is almost the same all over the planet, 12 hours of each. Equinox translates in Latin to equal.

Who really cares about all that, the important thing is that here in the Northern hemisphere it’s the FIRST DAY OF SPRING!

So why not make it a holiday! Have a First Day of Spring Celebration.

The Decorations: Anything that remind you of Spring. For me it’s lots of flowers and greenery. You could also use pictures and poster of the sun.

The Menu: How about challenging yourself to try a recipe for the first time. Ask your guests to do the same. Make it a night of “Firsts”

The Entertainment: This is a great thing to do with your friends/family. It happened by accident the first time we did it and it was so much fun we’ve done it many times since. As you sitting around visiting ask a question to the group about the first time they did something. Questions like: What was your first job? What did you do with your first paycheck? What is the first vacation you remember? What is the first gift you remember getting/giving? What was the name of your first grade teacher? … Get the idea? We went around the room each guest sharing their first. When we’ve done this I only needed a couple of questions prepared. As my guests answered, they came up with more “first” questions. You can learn a lot about your friends/family playing this game.
